I am Sam (…well at least for a day) – Business Development

February 12, 2008

While Sam is away on a well-deserved 2 week holiday, I’ve been given the task of running our weekly business development meetings, which Sam usually does.

These meetings are attended by the 5 directors of the company and dedicated to the service side of our work which includes TVCs and video games work. We also have regular development meetings for our original projects which I am in charge of. At business development meetings, we go through new enquiries, leads and follow-ups for service work.

We introduced them about a 6-months ago when we identified that we weren’t exploiting our service business to its full potential and our strategies for bringing in new work weren’t working. A big part of the problem was a cultural one. As directors of the company, we just weren’t putting in the same effort to bring in service work in a cohesive and strategic way as we were with getting our original content off the ground. In other words, we just weren’t giving it the attention it deserved.

By having regular business development meetings, everyone is involved in bringing in more work and things move a lot faster. Marketing and business development is something that everyone can pitch in to do in some way. A lot of it is knowing people and it’s surprising how useful some people’s contacts can be when you least expect it.

Thanks

With that last post, my commentary on our Mitsubishi promo is all but done. Sony Tropfest, Mitsubishi and PBL ran a competition whereby people could vote for their favorite supershort and be in the running to win a new Mitsubishi Lancer. Safer in a “Wild World” was announced the winner of the Audience Favourite vote earlier in January.

This would not have been possible without the support of everyone online who voted for us, so I’d like to extend a big thankyou to everyone out there who watched our promo online and voted for it. The promo continues to play on Australian TV and at Cinemas. On a sad note however, Mitsubishi announced last night that they would be closing the plant in Adelaide, which has been a fixture in this town for decades. With rising interest rates, I can only wish the best for the 950 employees concerned.

As I have run out of things to say about this project and it will be a while until I can declassify our next project, I will be posting up general stuff about what’s going on here in the studio and the world around us. I will also be showing some of the other stuff we have been working on. Hope you enjoy ;)
